I really hate nerfs, but I'm sad to say GR0H is broken and needs fixing.
Last night, I had a couple of buddies and their kids come over. We have a great time playing lots of different fighting games, passing the fightsticks around. After some 8 player Smash Ult, we moved on to 'big kid' fighting games with my gaming laptop hooked up.

Once we got to SCVI, we all loved it, as my friends and I played these games since the original Soul Edge. (Yes, we're old.) Mechanically, and technically, it's great. But what really shocked us is how unbalanced GR0H is.

My friends' 8-year-old son picked him, and thus began his reign of terror. He discovered that you can spam the strong attack button (I believe it was Y) and punish enemies with an infinite combo that cannot be blocked or dodged once started. And it's as easy as repeatedly pressing the buttons over and over.

There are powerful juggles with other characters, but not an infinite combo (that we found) with a single button press. This is truly broken.

We all tried to defeat him, with a winning streak of 9 before he finally had to go home (and go to bed). We all took it as a challenge to defeat him, and a couple of times, we got close. I had him down to a short bar with Sophitia, and another buddy also got close, but honestly, when you have 3 40yo men trying to come up with strategies to defeat a button mashing 8yo, all of who have been gaming since we were younger than he is, something is wrong.

Otherwise, the game is wonderful. I thought for sure my buddies would buy this game after playing it the first couple of rounds; my brother did exactly that when we played it the other day. But now, I'm rather certain that they won't be, because that, frankly, was ridiculous. You can't just leave in infinite combos like that and expect players to be pleased with the final product. When Bandai Namco spends ten minutes balancing out some of the clearly broken characters, they will have a gem on their hands. Until then, we pretty much have to ban a character that is otherwise clearly fun to play.

Clearly BN can do proper balancing; instead of my buddies walking away wanting to buy this game, they walked away all excited to buy DBFZ, which is clearly balanced properly.

Thank you all for reading my wall of text. Have a nice day. :)

There are no infinite combos in SC6, even if there were, damage scaling would not allow any damage after a certain point.
You guys just failed to figure out a way to escape. Probably should have blocked low fast at some point.

Finally someone gets it! Took you long enough though. XD

I enjoyed reading that post, and as someone of a similar age and gaming pedigree, it did resonate with me. However, Raphael also has a spammable combo that I've been using a lot in the create your own character story mode that I'm sure you could beat him with equal spamming.

Some of the toughest opponents in it can be beaten with simple button mashing with Raphael's moveset, but it does still require timing. Maybe that 8 year old just took you all to school, I got a laugh out loud at the image of three 40 years olds suddenly realising that ♥♥♥♥ had got real and that they needed to confer on tactics to beat an 8 year old.

Now that 8 year old has a tale to tell all his buddies, about how he whipped his Dad and all his Dad's friends too.

In short, it's definitely got some button mashing elements, but better players might have been able to defensively counter it or fight fire with fire and button mash with another good spammer.

If he was juggling you for that long by mashing a single button then it probably wasn't an actual combo and you could have air controlled out of it.

Nobody has infinites in this game.

Groh won a major tournament and despite that he got most buffs in last patch... and he is getting even more despite now is a constant presene at tournaments.....

the game is balanced off of the japanese community whining

Each patch Groh was getting buffed more and more. Look at the notes. Even without the buffs he can still played one handed. Deep space waifu takes more skill than Groh. XD

Wow in an earlier post one compared SC6 to DBFZ.. you cant ones a 2d fighter one is 3d..SC has more move options and fights like it should where as DBFZ though really awesome is an in the air brawl fest which had some pretty unfair mechanics to itself too.. plus DBFZ only had one mechanic for power moved and instat combos, DB has less skill involved unless you know major block strings and combos but both games have cheesy characters that are almost instant winners

I never tried to compare the two games, other than we played both last night and had fun with both.

As for the other characters having similar juggle combos, that may be but is not really a 'fix', unless you think two wrongs make a right or you should fight fire with fire. ;)

To be fair, it was my second time playing and my buddies' first time playing SCVI. So I'm sure a more experienced player could have figured out a way out. I don't really think that's the point here. One-button near-infinite combos are not something that should be encouraged.

I'm glad you enjoyed my story. :)

(I suppose I should have expected the 'git gud' posts)

Groh is unga bunga as all hell but he doesn't stand out as being too strong to me. I think part of the problem is that Groh's extremely simple and effective kit makes it much easier for players to be better with him than say, characters like Astaroth or Maxi.

Just use guard impact....
IBJamon Jan 6, 2019 @ 11:05am
How do you use that? As I said in my other posts, we are n00bs to this game, so I would be happy to learn how to deal with this. Thanks!

Just watch out when he soul charges. Groh can teleport anywhere for a limited amount of time. I still have no answer on getting in. Also I m experimenting on how to deal with laggy grohs that can suspiciously ignore gi. GIing can be risky for a guard break if you miss per use. Dont rely on it too much. Make sure you time it well and let it count.
