How does Zasalamel's curse work?

I only seen 2-3 ways to apply the curse, and one way to release it, but i don't see any difference when i do other than a cool pattern on the ground. if it causes any dmg, i don't see it at all.

It slows/stuns the opponent. Apparently the more curses the opponent has when you detonate it, the longer it will get stuned.
It freezes the opponent, leaving him completely vulnerable, so you can continue doing a combo.
