can you unlock Soul Edge and Soul Calibur for characters?

Nope.
Only one who has Soul Calibur is Xianghua.
Dunno if you need to play the "story" for it tho.

that's sad, i remember the older games everyone had Soul Calibur or Soul Edge

Yeah I really hoped for it to return too.
The two handed characters had even both "Swords" at once, was really cool.
But it wasn't in SC5 so yeah...best hope is DLC now.

You know what would be cool? Soulcalibur or Soul edge Geralt. Hey if he had both I can see it being steel soul edge and silver Soulcalibur. I'm imagining it now and It's sexy as hell.
