Probably this, Rapheal played a huge role in the lore between SC2-3. Specifically 4 years after Kilik's adventure he faces down nightmare, loses, nearly dies, but Seig decides he's had enough killing and with the help of the suddenly appearing Soul Calibur shatters Soul Edge. The wounds Rapael suffers turns him into a vampire from SC3 onwards.
I'm not sure if Namco is going to change this now with the series 'reset' and the inclusion of time travel junk.
