My tip: With one friend, choose 4-player scenario.
Then set players in the row: You, AI, friend, AI
It is better if every Ai "sit" between both humans. Because the AIs are very trade-friendly, you can get 2 for 1 resources.
But if yout friend come direct after you, the AI have no more "presents" for him. Or if 2 Ais come direct after another, your friend (or you) has from this "friendly trades" too much cards, and has to wait two dice-throws (7!) till he can use theese ressources.
In a 6-player-scenario should be the row : You, AI, AI, friend, AI, AI
or with 3 humans: You, AI, friend, AI, friend, AI
