"Catan gold coins" are an ingame-money. You have to buy them with real money, then, with gold coins buy products in the Catan-store.
Without buying, for free, you can only play one game all 12 hours, and only against AIs; without "freematch"(this you can play against people as often you want, but it has ever the same map).
If you buy p.e. the base game, you can play it as often you want against people or AIs.

BUT: Because of you buy at Steam ingame-money, and not the game, you can´t give back game and can´t get back money. And, it could happen, you have "gold coins" remaining.
Look at this discussionside. Since server change last year the game is very buggy. Since there they solved a lot of problems, but "perfect" is far away.

I say: "Wait. Play freematch against people, and the other games against AIs as often you can and want. Look some times on this side. If no more every day are posts about mistakes, then buy ."
