Proposal - gracefull resignation.
Allow a player to indicate that they give up.

[x] I'm happy for the game to end with the current victory points as final score.

If all players except the sole leader have it ticked, the game ends on the leaders next turn.
If a player who has the box ticked moves down a place (e.g. joint 2nd to 3rd place) the box gets unchecked automatically.
Players cannot see whether their peers have this checked.

This should reduce unconsensual departures from the game and stop long games dragging out beyond when they should.

Thank you very much for your proposal. We thought about it in the past but see one flaw in that. This system could be abused to farm elo very quickly. Of course this - as usual - doesn´t affect the majority of players since they play straight but as a developer we have to keep such a behaviour in mind. Do you have something in mind to prevent a missuse of a system like that?

I don't really know how elo works right now - but I would have thought you should only gain it by beating a wide diversity of players rather than beating the same person (or alt account) over and over again... e.g. If I'm 5-1 up over bob in seafarers, beating him another ten times shouldn't add to my score. If a farmer has to buy the game for each disposable person to beat that would deter quite a bit.

Obviously, you'd have to modify that simple picture for the fact there are 3-4 players per game, and adjust accordingly.

Your gain or loss of ELO is not affected by the amount of games you played against an opponent. It is only affected by the difference between your ELO and the ELO of your opponent. Meaning the larger the gap is the greater the possible win for the player with the lower ELO. (And the other way around.) It would be kind of unfair to only use the ELO in the first few match of 2 players don´t you think? ;)

So the worry about farming ELO against a disposable account? Can you give an example of how early resignation would allow that to happen more given the 2nd paid-for-the-game-account would drop in ELO quite quickly if it didn't play other people?

ELO is a pointless metric in games like Catan anyway. Players could just team up on the player with the most ELO and no matter how big his skill, he can't win. If all other players place the robber on you no matter who is leading, you re doomed. And it is not against the rules either.

It is also more beneficial to make the player with most ELO lose since the ELO calculation would make all other players win more. At best case, ELO should be hidden from the players.

But it seems like ELO is one of the features the developers wanted to use to keep players interested in playing this game.

Elo is silly from the start. It should be a measure of skill. Instead it is a measure of luck (dice) and whether another person picks on you or not. Not to mention whether the other plays ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥-moves like building a second city before the barbarians strike the first time.

Edit: I should add that it's also a measure of bugs encountered :( I had to leave games because of bugs and there is no 3rd attempt to rejoin. Or the game freezes over the AI and one has to leave because rejoining doesn't fix the problem.

Sometimes you just know you are going to lose and just want out. Or, your boss tells you to get back to work, or the wife tells you to feed the baby. It's time to go and you want to get out of the game gracefully.

What if you simply made it so that there was *no* change in ELO score from a resigned game? In other words, the only way to gain or lose ELO would be to complete a game as per the standard rules and conditions of the game.

I have personally encountered multiple situations where it would have been nice to be able to gracefully end a game. For example, we started a multiplayer game and realized we selected the wrong scenario. Or, we started playing Greater Catan but the game just dragged on and on and we both wanted to finish it, but couldn't due to the possible impact on our Karma. Ultimately, the game should be fun, right? I don't find it very fun to sit through multiple rounds waiting for an inevitable conclusion; at least in single player we can just quit and start a new one!

Still no meaningful reply about how allowing this suggestion would allow elo farming...

Since you can unlock every aspect of the game at least for a limited time it is possible someone might try to create a second account to boost its main account. Don´t forget you start with 1000 ELO

resign gracefully (not loose karma); join back in antoher game with your 2 accounts.

I mean people spend an additional 15 $ to smurf in CS ^^ "Just to reck them noobs." We also saw people using 2 accounts in CU to play in one match again one other player.

Useres are crafty in finding loopeholes. That is why we need to set clear rules before changing something like this.
