I compare them, because you say it doesn't meet the definition of FREE to play. Where as, these other FREE to play games give you an example of how ALL FREE to play games hide behind pay walls. It's the nature of the FREE. Besides you are totally missing the point of scrolls. They unlock random boards. So you could grind random play (enjoyable), for more scrolls, which lets you play more random play (enjoyable), for more scrolls. Never ending. Whats your problem with that, your bound to have another opinion of how that is still not FREE to play.

Except the random boards don't show up most of the time in standard play.
So you could (maybe, if you're lucky) grind random play for more scrolls, which lets you (maybe, if you're lucky) play more random play, but probably be stuck on the default board more often than not, even when spending scrolls to avoid it. Or when spending real money for it.
As I said before, the amount of enjoyment you get from Catan Universe by playing the default map is almost zero after a few games. In LoL I never needed to pay to have fun. Same in Runescape. These were good examples of a free game. Catan Universe is not even 10% as free as these two games. It is a premium model which is giving a demo version to the players to lure them in. There is no way you can call this freemium as there is very little free content.
Grinding in Runescape was a part of the game as intended. Catan is not like that. There should not be any kind of grinding in Catan. You should enter a game, have all the features that all paying players have, everyone has the same chance to win. That's it. The only exception is that paying players can play with the expansions and maybe their avatars have fancier hats and clothes.
Saying that you have the opportunity to do the scrolls grind and keep features unlocked is irrelevant. This is not the part of actual gameplay. You don't grind Runescape or LoL every day in order to keep playing the next day. If there are obstacles to starting a game, the game is not free anymore. Why should I have to grind to get access to the main features of the game? It is like a job now.
It's not like we are asking for free use of the expansions. Just the base game, the core of the game features should be free. This would invite much more players than tricking players the first time they play the game.
Also I understand that the level is limited to 20 so at some point you start earning less and less scrolls. Finally you still have to start paying to get access to the base game. Or you create a new user... Which totally obliterates the reason to play around with this system. Anyway, why is there even an experience system implemented in this game? If you enter the game you are equal to all other players anyway. There is so much fluff around the game that the actual gameplay is suffering. A lot of key features are missing or poorly implemented.
The scrolls are not even the element of the actual gameplay. What actually is a relevant part of the Catan game is what happens between creating the map and declaring the winner. Everything else is pointless. The scrolls are a part of the shop, a microtransaction element. Basically like a gateway drug to make you either play more or spend money to get them.
On another note, the players would only need to pay once and not worry about buying anything at all. How does that seem like a viable business model to you? After seeing how the developers do not care about the players, it seems like they just want to make you buy all the expansions and at some point stop supporting the game. No refunds. There is no more money to be made once the players do not have anything to spend on. Therefore no bug fixes as it is not worth it to the company. This happened with the previous Catan app developed by the same company.
