Raptor usage in Singleplaye
Hey all, just a quick question is there any point of equipping Raptors in singleplayer at this point, Or is it better just keep Viper MKIIs assigned

With the reduction of effectiveness on fighters it's been my thought, though I haven't tested it, that Raptors would be good for the firewall. Even if the Devs up the fighter vs fighter damage and fix fighters floating along side their targets without damaging them they still aren't much against the bigger ships, so protecting against hacking would be good. My problem is that's about all they are good for.

Doesn't anyone have experience with raptors? What else are they good for?

As a lark, I have used them to attack with the vipers, yes i know they aren't used for that, but i was bored :) I liked the suggestion of using them to scout enemy positions, so you can jump fleets. and know exactly what is there
Pulling from the TV series, the pilot episode had a raptor paired with a wing of vipers in order to take advantage of it's much longer sensor range. The raptor would track and guide the vipers to their target and stay outta the fight. Then there was the fight to liberate New Caprica, where a wing of raptors were actually used to deploy drones to mimic the dradis profiles of the two battlestars and draw the enemy out of position. Then there's the search-and-rescue ops that they conduct during battles to rescue pilots who've ejected, boarding actions, etc.

I really just think that, if there was an 'approach' phase of a battle where you're trying to locate the enemy fleet, and you're playing more with trying to get a good look at the enemy, the raptors would have more of a use as scouts and could even have a decoy aspect where you could try and make it look like you had a ship or two running right at them when it's really just a buncha drones. The tradeoff being that the more raptor wings you take cuts down the slots you can fill with vipers. But, a mode like this would kinda be drawn out and better suited to slightly larger engagements, the map also would be larger to allow ships to be outta dradis range, which leads to retreating tactics, etc....

The sense I've always had was that the vipers were killing machines, you give em a target and they'll rip them to shreds... the raptors did everything else you needed small craft to do, recon, rescue, redirection, etc. I don't really get that impression from the game.
The problem for me is that Raptors take up valuable Viper slots. My standard operating procedure for hacking is to prioritise any Nemesis I see and turn them into paste before they get chance to do anything of significance, so I don't see much use for them to counter hacking.

If hanger-capable ships had a support slot explicitly for craft other than Vipers alongside their standard Viper slots, I'd consider taking them.

But as it stands, I can take Raptors to enhance hack defence on my ships that very rarely get hacked. Alternatively I can take Vipers to take down enemy craft, harass capitals, and run anti-missile defence at all stages of the game early, mid, and late. I don't even take the craft that deploy chaff as early game Vipers excel at intercepting missiles if you position and order them correctly, and mid - late game Vipers and Flak can work in tandem to handle any missile threats.

Pro-tip - raptor rockets reload after landing back on their ship.

I haven't tested this "full scale"; but I imagine if you had 4-8 raptor squadrons you could do some serious missle damage.

Is that a better choice than vipers? I don't know... but it's certainly exciting :)

Hmmm maybe I will try two or three Raptor squadrons with one of my Carrier Groups and see if they make a dent

I have been thinking about doing that as well, Just as a fun experiment. Except, I was thinking of using 8-10 Raptor squads.

While that would make for a pretty nifty alpha-strike, you're in serious trouble if raiders are fielded or you need the specialist raider types destroyed quickly. Last thing you need is boarding troubles when you could've prevented it. A couple of ships with torpedoes will achieve the same effect, while retaining their standard usage.

It'd be fun to watch for ol' ♥♥♥♥♥ and giggles, but I seriously doubt it'd be a practical approach.
