That's 50 years after the game's time frame. The colonial fleet expanded. Also, the fleet had heavy units like the Pegasus or the Jupiter class but also lighter one like the Valkyrie (kinda like the Adamant).
But my take is 120 battlestars means 120 "main line units", i.e. heavy units. And perhaps a lot more medium and light units.

The 12 battlestar by planet refers to the 1st war when at the beginning of the Jupiter programm, each colony got one. But later in the war, they surely build more of them.

Considering Galactica belonged to Battlestar Group 75, each group with a Battlestar leading it, you can assume the fleet got much bigger by the time of the fall of the colonies.

The 1 Battlestar per planet rule only applied to the Jupiter class in the war didn't it? I could be mistaken on that point though. However with the introduction of the other classes like Mercury, Nova, Valkyrie and Odin it's fair to say the fleet was huge by the time the colonies fell.
Yea, that 1 per colony thing was just about the first bunch of Jupiters when they first rolled out, as far as i understand it. Of course, later there were more and of course smaller/ older Battlestars were also available...

Numerical BSG designations seem to be based on modern day naval strike group designations, which don't correlate to the overall number of ships in a navy.

Strike groups are formed, disbanded, reassigned and have their compositions changed to meet mission objectives. The same ship or ships could be used in multiple groups over time.

The numbers don't necessarily tell us anything about the size of the colonial fleet. Sure, Galactica is currently the lead ship in Battlestar Group 75, but it may have been a component of BSG 17, BSG 25, BSG 38, etc at various points in time. It doesn't necessarily mean there have been at least 75 Battlestars built.

RDM has stated his inspiration is from a US Navy Carrier Battlegroup, Hence the BSG-75 desgination, reference real life carrier groups.

Now as for the hull numbers if you look at close ups of the Galactica's Name Plate, or Pegasus, or the Colonial symbol inside the hangar pods, you will see that says BS-75. To me this leads me to believe that Galactica was the 75th Battlestar hull constructed...doesn't matter the specific class of Battlestar, since the US Navy has had multiple class of Aircraft Carrier since the USS Langley, but the all numbers have all been sequential, ie Lexington was CV-2, Saratoga CV-3, Ranger CV-4, Yorktown CV-5, etc all the way up to the USS Gerald R Ford CVN-78

With Artemis class Battlestars, and maybe a few other that are not included in this game i would believe that, as with all the 'Imperial/colonial wars between the colonies who knows how many Battlestars have been built...especially as we are talking about several hundred years and the US has built 78 Carriers in the last 80 years with 2 more under construction give or take a few years.

I have watched the series several times and I pick up on things each time I watch. I recall Starbuck saying something in that order but I always took it as we didn't hear about everything. Not sure where they get all the metal. Lol...
