The Celestra should always hop in there unless you already have another Celestra or Daedalos itself in that fleet. Can you try to remove it and add it again? If that doesn't work, submit a bug report.
As far as I can tell, Celestra is the only "support" ship...other then Daedalos. All others are capital ships. I've never seen it otherwise. The only other ships you could call "support" ships are raptors, sweepers and such which are assigned to the capitals.

Correct. The Cylons have their own support ship as well, the Hydra.
how do I unlock support ships?
The Celestra is part of the Broken Alliance? DLC and needs to be unlocked through the campaign.

As for the Celestra taking up fleet points instead of a support slot is probably because there is room for it to fit, try adding it last to a full fleet.

The celestra will always take the support slot first, unless it is full.

Yep, I was just in the game to double check. It uses the slot first.

The Ghost Fleet DLC's Defender is also a support ship. Instead of armor repair and missile stocks, it provides a extra squadron and a repair bay with flak defenses.

It also provides more Marines to help fight off boarding Cylons. Can be very useful.

At least it's designed to shoot back, plus you can always use another Viper squadron.

I thought they added marines as well... seems they don't.

The Defender can send out reinforcements which give extra marines to the reinforced ship.

Oops, I was referring to raptors, seems I got my wires crossed. Bad things happened to me.
A flagship was boarded by over 450 cylons today, I tried to help them by sending raptors...
The gunfire... the screams... those horrid metallic faces... but by Kobol... those screams...

LOL....keep an eye on those heavy raiders, Vipers can shoot them down pretty quick....but you have to specifically target them.

A successfully boarded ship is neutralized, but suffers no other penalty; usual picks are the flagship and whoever the new recruit is.

If they're heading after the new recruit, it usually keeps the Heavy Raiders busy and out of your hair, so let them dog pile on.
