Viper Mk1 vs Mk2
After doing a few different tests with Vipers, usually having a Berzerk vs a Berzerk, I've found that Vipers seem to be basically the same in terms of fighter interception, with an overall lower model and hull count and a good increase in speed going to the Mk2s.

Every time I fight however, my vipers, be they Mk1 or Mk2, outperfrom the AI Vipers, any idea what this is about? I'm glad I didthis testing, cause it seems there's not many benefits to picked the mark 2 over the mark 1 in skirmish. Need to test against Cylon though.

viper mk1 vs raider prototype 1 on 1 will have raider win so need to double up on them. viper mk2 vs raider prototype 1 on 1 will have viper win very quickly. hope that helps as a comparison.

Why is this the case? And what about raider vs mk2? Why do my fights always beat the AI fighters?

EDIT: Just tried a few skirmishes with Cylons vs Colonials. I won every time, but differently. This time I had 1 squadron of Raiders fight 1 Squadron of Mk1 Vipers, and just barely won.

So I thought that this was due to the Berzerk I was using having a better evade stat despite power distribution from me never being less than 150% in the Hangar, making it difficult to win. So I swapped it out for an Adamant and I piloted it, so the Ai wouldn't use munitions to skew the result. I proceeded to wipe the floor with them. Mk1 Vipers vs Raiders, Adamant vs Talon, and I only lost 2 fighters.

What is going on here? Is the AI not pumping it's power anywhere? Does it keep trying to tell it's fighters to defend it's ship and not attack my fighters? I've seen Cylon fighters dominate me before, yet I've yet to lose a single match regardless of the ship or fighter squadron I'm using. I don't get it.

Cylon AI doesn't always prioritise the hangar subsystem correctly, so their fighters usually don't get that mch of an evade buff. For Colonials the evade buff depends on the ship but can't be increased or decreased by using posture, only damage to the subsystem lowers the buff. Berzerks get a crazy 50 evade, so their Vipers usually wipe the floor with any hostile Vipers or Raiders.

Viper Mk1's aren't worth much, but they're decent at delaying enemy squadrons because of their higher hull points. That's about it for them though, because they're cannon fodder like the Raider Prototypes. Viper Mk2's kill everything pretty easily, especially when they're launched from a Berzerk or Atlas.

With the current balance, you should always use Viper Mk2's over Viper Mk1's. They will be able to handle enemy squadrons far easier, they're more accurate and have a higher speed which helpe them in both dogfights and munition interception. Because there isn't really any downside when you use Viper Mk2's in Single Player, you should just use them to make things even easier for you.

But then what's the reason for my Mk1 vipers beating the Mk2s in a fair 1v1 with the same carriers?

It's not seeming like the Mk2s are better in a dogfight. More testing to be done I guess, gotta get my friends involved.

Thanks for the responses btw.

That is strange, I'll try the same experiment but for me the opposite has been true.

i actually dont use the berserk anymore. i own that dlc but the campain battles changed to running down individual ships spread out rather than fleet engagements so i disabled that dlc. i do use the other one though as the minerva is awesome. my ideal fleet is 2 jupiter and 2 minevera. thats 8000 points right there and 8 squadrons of viper mk2 plus 2 raptors. i rarely use the atlas carrier also. its not bad but for the same fleet point cost i can have a minotaur with a lot more firepower and manuverability. so my example above is based on using vipers lauched from artemis battlestars and adamants early game when switching from mk1 to mk2 vipers.
