How do you retreat?

I see that as a measured statistic for each ship but have not figured out how to do it.

Right click a ship (Or select it and press space) to bring up it's contextual menu. There, you'll see in the bottom left corner of the screen an option to retreat. That ship will then spend a few turns spinning up it's FTL and get out of the battle.

Note that any ships which retreat will move to a random adjacent tile on the strategy layer - I personally recommend retreating your entire force if you ever decide it's time to cut your losses. From what I've observed, ships that are ordered to retreat will stay together.
