Why would you dock your fighters in the middle of a battle? Do they slowly get repaired/replaced when in dock? Or is it just a trap?

If any sqadron is weakend or loses a fighter, or if your Raptors, Sweeper, etc use their muntions you can they will get repaired and rearmed slowly during the battle, and will keep them safe.

Repair and rearm. You'll also replace any lost craft in the squad. Defensive posture repairs the squadrons faster, or by diverting power to Engineering as the Cylons.

it's really useful in campaign if you run into a cerastes fleet that shreds your vipers

I figured out that it restocked raptor ammo, but couldn't tell if it replaced fighters or not. About how long does it take if half your vipers are gone?

It can take a few turns, but you can make it go faster by shifting to defensive stance. While defensive stance doesn't effect the hangar itself, squadron repairs are controlled by engineering, which does get boosted by going defensive.

Of course, this means it takes longer if you leave the ship in the offensive stance instead.

It'll update the fighter count on the launch button as they get repaired.
