Only use emp mines sometimes, but youre right, harder to use. A little bit of practice.
You can zone out some enemy’s with it
DerRaketenRudi is right in that if you overwhelm the enemy significantly, you are only wasting time with the satellites, but I'd argue that if you regularly are in this position, you may want to try a harder difficulty setting. As for me, I see every battle as a repair bill which the satellite buffs can help reduce.
Regarding mines, as offensive weapons they require finesse, but you can very easily use them to help shape the engagement as the AI will be quite predictable in trying to avoid them. They can be used to keep the enemy inside your firing arcs, to help you get in their blindspots, to deny them the use of space terrain features and most importantly to split up the enemy fleet so that you may face the faster enemies separately from the heavy units they are escorting.
Can Daedalus retreat during combat like other ships? Select it, see if the retreat option is present at the bottom of the screen.
