God alone knows who holds the rights to the Star Trek series as since Paramount split from CBS each holds rights to different Trek Properties in an arrangement that would confuse, and impress, a Ferrengi.
Now Babylon 5 and/or Star Gate might be an interesting notion....
Star Trek — unlikely for reasons given above.
B5 would be cool.
Stargate would be awesome — as an XCOM game.
What about Space Above and Beyond?
That universe gives more than enough background and perfectly fits such a game... shame that it has never been done...
rough design idea:
you have your houses/ factions (those who know the BTU know what i mean) ... your usual diplomacy, espionage, research etc... your usual building colonies/ planets up, producing armies...
when it comes to war or conquering planets. you first have to get your fleets and transports there, have to engage in space battle to make the way free for landing ships... then ground combat with ´Mechs, Infrantry and so on follows... yea, you get the idea :)
Babylon 5 has plenty of ships to choose from even before you start looking at the RPG system they created for the show, which included further information about the races including creating a massive number of ships as it included rules for ship to ship battles.
The Earth Alliance, for example, has Hyperion Cruisers, Nova Dreadnoughts, Cotton Tenders, Omega Destroyers, Warlock Destroyers, Three types of StarFury fighters, two shuttle types and breaching pods all of which appear in the series or TV films directly connected to the series. (Meaning not spin offs such as Crusade and Legend of the Rangers)
When you add in ships created for the RPG system you end up with about 6 Star Fury types, depending on date, and more capital ships for all the other races.
You also have multiple time settings, Dilgar war, Minbari War, Pre-Babylon 5 period, series period, Interstellar Alliance era. The Dilgar War and post Minbari/pre-B5 period would make for good settings. (The Minbari war would not make for a good setting since their ships are simply too powerful)
Fighters are used in DS9, and mentioned and seen in several of the bigger battles during the Dominion war. These are, however, not single seat fighters like the Viper but much larger craft more akin to armed shuttles.
I believe Cryptic/PWE Owns at least part of the Star Trek License at the moment
Would be cool to see so many ships to choose from.
Remember disney is now in charge of destroying *cough* i mean "continuing" the Star Wars cashgrab *cough cough* damit! sorry, i mean franchise.
