It's indeed the first war. The first war started when the Cylons rebelled against the Colonials. There was no instant nuclear fire like in the second war, it was a more "conventional" war.
About Galactica's disappearance, it's actually part of the game's campaign plot.
The Colonies each retain their own ministries of defence, which is where Athena went. However, by the Articles of Colonization, the Colonial Fleet is obligated to provide assistance to all colonies. It's possible that Picon never engages Athena in direct combat for fear of losing her. A bit like Tirpitz, which was useless for a large part of the war.
Its all 2005, its just the 2005 show took elements from the original and put it into the first war.
This all takes place before Blood and Chrome, Adama probobly hasn't even enlisted yet tbh.
This game takes place in the very begining of the First Cylon war, Blood and Chrome the end, and BSG 2005 the 2nd Cylon war.
