Now that's the kind of posts I like, thank you.
That's a good observation, I'll give you that. I'm personally not a fan of soap-opera moments though. I mean I like how they made Gaius Baltar basically the Casanova of the series and portrayed Helo/Athena and Adama/President (which wasn't overdone) relationships, but I found the relationship between Starbuck and Apollo and Number Six's "moments" kinda unfitting and random at times. But that's just me. I enjoyed the show mostly for the "feeling of survival" and the overall story.
In the newer show, they are americans plain and simple.. with a few offhand mentions of greek gods and whatnot. The tech is rather more primitive than in the old if you discount the FTL capability, in Carpica they even use VCR tapes for crying out loud. And ofcourse Cylon are now the BSG version of Skynet.
I did too, the feeling of survival is one of the main interesting strand, but the fact that they made the human parts, with character development, casual friendship and romance (except Batlar/9), and politics, activism etc...so mundane is what makes it so immersive and real for me.
I agree, don't get me wrong. All those things were done well in the show. I'm not saying romance and sex scenes are*always* a bad thing, just like character development and politics it was done well and mostly done when necessary, just *sometimes* I felt it was out of place, making the show a bit tedious/boring to watch. Not really a major con nonetheless.
As much as I liked the show, I can't help but laugh at the original Starbuck for calling the reboot "♥♥♥♥♥♥ by a Cylon" and "softcore sci-fi porn". It's funny because it's true.
Having read this I now know why the original helmets looked egyptian.
""I was aware that Glen had used Mormon influences and how he had created the cosmology, but I'm not that familiar with Mormon belief or practice so it was kind of like whatever was in the show is what I was dealing with," concedes Moore, who also worked on the "Star Trek" franchise. "I essentially looked at the original series as mythos and the way it dealt with religion in sort of a global sense."
Taking inspiration from a post-9/11 world, the religious universe of the new "Battlestar Galactica" is as diverse and as complex as our own.
The refugee humans, the Colonials, are polytheists in the mold of the Romans and Greeks, while their creations, the mechanical Cylons, have a strict belief in a singular God and in the soul, and are on a mission to eradicate the non-believing humans.
