Since you said running around the begining area what is the only info i can really go off. You might of not done your first boss fight i assume that being in the desert zone you get to this area by going up a tower in the town area right at the top there be a door and then going through that door will put you at the top of said tower. There be a platform off to the right with yet another door right at the end from there you'll be at the desert zone by going through that door and have to go left you can't go right yet aka if you want some goodies you'll have to come back to this area way later.
If you have done you're first boss then you need to go to town and go to the left the character you get from the first boss of the game, as it gains the ability to stick to those checkered blocks and fit into narrow areas. And yeah if you even beyond that point then like i said i have no clue exactly how far you've gotten but what i provided hope it helps to un stuck yourself if not be more detailed in your thread helps big time.

I cant go in the desert area. everything kills me fast. So i assume that is an area I need to go later. im stuck with just my dragon shape. I can't go anywhere else. I go to the right, and it's just beaches and ocean. i go underwater, and I get to this house with three doors in it. one is a shop, another is a room with an empty treasure chest. and that's the extent of where I can go. So you're telling me I need to go through the desert area? If so, that means Im cheating my health.
Yeah 80s - up to around 2004 were pretty annoying tough games of the time. And sure enough this is a 1989 game remastered after all (sort of remake too but mainly a remaster as not too much was changed or updated from how it originally came in 1989 i found)
So yeah you need to make your way to the 2nd boss of the game (sorry i did slightly forget the intro part of the game has a boss fight so its technically the 2nd boss of the game not the 1st out of 6 boss's) this is a quite the linear game in terms of its progression the way you get to the end sure can be different from each playthough depending on with how much money you have stocked up and bought items or find items but overall to progress through it is always gonna be the same steps. So as told when you explored as much as you can to get what ever gear/item you can head out back there for the 2nd boss.
If you need some help here is some knowledge / reminders spoiler tagged in cause you don't want to know just a hint of what was about to be said or anyone else reading into this thread. best of luck to you even if your going to start cheating to do so.
1: Before heading towards the boss down the stone well keep going to the left of the level and up the pyramid shape and down it at the end level there be a chest you can open that lets you net 3 hearts instead of the 2 you have at the start.
2: Don't forget to use few not all cause you may wanna the stuff for the boss or later in the game but use of your extras stuff from fireballs to booming rangs to aid you in the tough moments and such but overall just try not to be hit as much is the goal through out the whole game.
3: The plants are actually the most easiest to not deal with in this area even in later areas of the game i always find its the clouds that are always the hard to take out. With the plants you can use your fire breath dragon attack to destroy the fireballs they throw at you same goes to those stone heads shooting fireballs this makes it easier to get by.
4: There is a doctor shop not far from this 2nd boss encounter, so heal up if you have the cash and try get through the shooting heads without getting hit as much and you should at the boss with full health or as close to it what would help a lot.
Even on hard setting once you get enough heart containers, the game gets easier, even though you spend the first few hours dieing a lot and rushing agenst the timer.
Also there are online guides on how to complete this game, and where all the hidden stuff is, and since this game can be played in window mode, there is no issue with checking your progress though the guide as you play the game.
