Personally, I don't really have an issue with the controls myself while playing this. Though, my wife, who has much smaller hands than mine, dislikes the control scheme, like many. It may have something to do with a long history of popular and obscure handhelds on my end.
If you prefer larger controllers (like the XBox style), I would probably recommend getting it on Steam or PS4. But if the venture of playing it as a handheld with the TV option is more appealing to you, I'd say the Switch.
And yes--the pro-controller for the Switch is supposed to be pretty good. If anything, it feels like an in-betweeen the PS4 and XBox controllers. At least, that's what I've heard. It's on my list of things to get for my Switch in the future.
If you care about trophies > ps4
If you care about playing wherever > switch
If you care about (hopefully) mods > pc
:)
Thanks Deihnyx for double-dipping with PS4 and Switch versions =)
Thanks developers you've done an amazing job.
So other versions don't have rumble? Or do they have rumble, but just not HD rumble? Does this game take adantage of the HD Rumble? If so, how often in the game is rumbling going on and would I be able to tell the difference between the HD rumble versus any other rumble. Silly questions I know, but I'm eager to know.
I don't personally care for Trophies or achievments. And the Switch I Play docked 95% of the time. Portability is a plus, but I'll rarely use it portably. A problem is I have this issue with other games as well. If a game is multi-platform and equal across all versions, which do I get it for.
Although it's a fairly short game, you will want to play it again and again. It only took about 5 hours with some pretty solid grinding time to get enough gold to buy the better gear.
Never got that hype around the pro controller tbh. Seems to be a mind-thing. Haven't tried the Joy-Cons yet but they can't be so much worse than a normal controller. They basically are a normal controller if you put them together... Just seems like people are used to the standard controller feeling and don't want to give anything else a chance because they'd have to get used to it first. And it is called "Pro".
Anyway B2T. Unless you are spending a lot of time on the PS4 I'd ignore that option. Which changes it into the question portable (Switch) or not (PC)? At least for me. I'm still not sure because it is so difficult to find a Switch around me and Amazon still is waiting for new stock.
Even with those problems I'm leaning towards getting it on the Switch due to two reasons. For one the release date on PC is off a few months still. And the second reason is that I'm going to play it with a controller anyway and due to certain circumstances I don't have the luxury to always have a controller connected to my PC - making it a hassle to play this game on PC whenever I want. Always need to connect the controller first >.>
Well. Maybe I'll get it on both. It looks pretty good and basically what Deihnyx said so the chance is there.
The Pro controller looks alright and I bought one but I've not used it. I prefer handheld mode, I've only played on the TV for about 20 minutes since launch day. There's nothing like a Wonder Boy session on the toilet.
You know, if you got it on the PS4 you could just fire up PS4 Remote Play on your PC and play it that way. Since it's over your local network [Ethernet being best] there's no latency. You'd have to settle for 720p unless you have a PS4 Pro though. That'd keep you going until it's out on PC.
The problem for me is the D-pad. So far I don't have this problem with wonder boy, but in shovel knight it's very easy to unintentionally direct the joycon stick down during a right/left jump, leading to downwards attacks. Additionally, during the boss-battles the stick actually slips quite easily. The four buttons which you can also use as a D-pad don't have these problems but are not well located and not really a good D-pad replacement. For these games, I would love a left joycon which has a proper D-pad instead of the stick.
I don't have the pro-controller yet, but, supposedly, the D-pad on it is much more comfortable to use. For me this is sufficient reason to at least consider getting one.
Back to the topic of which version to get: despite D-pad complaints (which for this game are not nearly as bad as for shovel knight), I think the Switch version is the best one to get simply by virtue of its mobility. Even if your normal usage does not include hand held mode, it will be there for the few times you'd like to have a game with you when travelling.
The other versions don't have any rumble. This is because Nintendo provided the tools to make it particularly easy to provide interesting form of HD Rumble usage, whereas getting something that doesn't suck with traditional rumble takes a lot more effort. Arguably it isn't a game that was designed with rumble in mind and so it isn't the bestest usage of HD Rumble, but it is a nice touch in some of the cases it is used for. The game rumble when taking a fireball in your shield, getting hit, jumping into water, lava, that sorts of occasional things.
Steam controller has HD Rumble which is similar to Switch, if I'm not mistaken. So, will the pc version take advantage of this feature?
