Characters walk too fast!
Movement isn't very precise as characters often don't stop in their tracks as soon as you unpress the button, which makes controlling them in scenarios where a lot of precision is required a lot more difficult than it has to be.
I don't know how much the developers are willing to tweak the original gameplay, but I guess that's one of the things that should be looked into.

I played this game in my PC-Engine about 20 years ago.
Actually, the characters would still move in some distance when unpressing the buttons in original version.
But running game in PC or other platforms would perform better and higher FPS, so it makes you feel more obvious now.

I have this same problem and it really sucks - caus I have 1 more achievement left and I wanna do it but not when the game plays at 20x speed, anyone got a fix for this?

They're not supposed to stop immediatly. Never was that way back in the days either.

The problem is you have a high screen refresh rate. The fix for this is to use the in-game settings option to set the frame cap to 60 fps. Then all the movements and animations and gameplay is what it should be.
