Same here, but there is the fact that the game is always sold by SEGA here and there, it could be an issue for allowing a remaster like Wonder Boy: the Dragon trap which contain both new and old visuals.
Also I started to play this game again and found some old fashioned game mechanics which could be somewhat annoying.
The beginning could be a way too slow (or not) compared to The Dragon Trap because of low tier boots.
And the Purapril castle's tower with the very long stair make it very long to climb and go down. At this time the down arrow + jump command on plateform didn't exist. So it makes the comeback as long as your climb.
I played both Sega Master System versions and the Megadrive/Genesis versions because I love the series but I really can't say the same :/
Also, the SMS version of Wonder boy in Monster World is just a bad port of the Genesis one, so please avoid it.
- A very strict time limit that regulary depletes your health
- Many items are just for points and without any really use.
- Linear stage progress without being able to return to earlier stages (okay, this one is debateble)
- As a result: Only a limited amount of gold, you have to know what to buy
- Overall a very high difficulty (especially in the original arcade version)
- Your movements (speed and jumping range) depend on your "boots" (if you do not buy better ones in the game then you won't come very far)
- The SMS version most people know is just a stripped down version of the arcade original.
As much I like Wonderboy in Monster Land, I think that "Wonderboy in Monster World" would be the better option for a remake because:
- It's easier, so it can be played by more people.
- No time limit.
- All items are meant to be used, not just for points.
- It's metroidvania-style so you can "explore" the world.
- As a result: you can always return to locations to find things you have missed
- As a further result: No gold limit -> Buy whatever you want
- Even though the game mechanic with the boots is here too, it's much more forgiving. Missed some boots? Just return to an earlier location and buy them.
Monster World
Monster World IV
I did a mario maker level based on the Pyramid from Monster World and i made a super expert version of it to.

The devs can have my house XD
I agree with the points that have been made here. Essentially a remake of Wonder Boy in Monster Land would really need to be a re-imagining to bring it into the modern era. Wonder Boy in Monster World or even Monster World IV would be better candidates for a remake, although I'm not sure they would benefit as much as the Dragon's Trap from being remade, as they are 16 bit games they actually hold up quite well graphically anyway.
Rather than a remake, I would personally like to see a direct sequel to the Dragon's Trap. A new game based on the Dragon's Trap.
For me, they can remake the arcade version of Monster Land, just adding some options like disabling the time limit/adjusting difficulty, and adding the exclusive SMS stage along its two bosses. Some more work, but it would be nice to have both halves of the story with the same quality.
Then they can enhanced remake Monster World & MW IV. ;) #havethemall
An easy mode could help?!
But the game need be the same dificult from the old game from Master System...
Though I agree that the screen timer and the fact that the game would reset itself if left paused too long are both terrible, terrible mechanics...
