Adventurer's chest. . .what's in them?

Are these random items. . are they only useful at the start? Are they based on skills or current progression? I opened one but I honestly can't tell what happened be cause my inventory was so cluttered. :)

Pretty sure its one each of the standard consumable items they hand out for completing various quests: lamden infusion, phoenix elixir, traveller horn, chimeric elixir, tonic biscuit.
