So... uhm, how do you play?

Rift with Touch. Started the demo and found myself in a small room, shoot to fire begin game, the thing rotates 90* and looks at an npc, something along the lines of PC player (take headset off and play on monitor).
I keep the headset on and shoot that and I'm in a room with lots of little npcs walking about. I can shoot them. Look out from headset and the monitor is showing first person perspective in a tunnel which I can move about using WASD.
Headset back on but all I can do is shoot the NPCs, there's a lot of them.
If I shoot Begin it simply rotates to PC player, nothing else happens. Am I being really stupid?

Hey, one of the devs here. Thanks for reaching out!
Where you playing by yourself? The demo for Panoptic is a local multiplayer game, so you need at least one other person to play with you. One person plays on the desktop in first person, and tries to sneak to the end of the level. If they get to the end and break the orb, they win.
The second player plays in VR, and tries to hunt the first person down and shoot them. If they kill them before they reach the orb, the second player wins.

What is the version number below the title in the main title screen ? And what headset are you using ?
