Different versions
I think it's generious that, in light of discontinuing the toys, Disney is now releasing Disney Infinity with all the characters unlocked. However, why release it as different versions instead of just one big ultimate version? Does each version only have certain characters and maps? Is each version essensially a pack for one base game? Is there any point in owning an earlier verion if you have a later version?

Those are 3 completely different games named 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0. And in the Gold Edition, for each of them, everything is unlocked.

2.0 includes also all the characters from 1.0, but you can only use those 1.0 characters in Toy Boxes.

3.0 includes all characters from 1.0 and 2.0, but those characters can only be used in Toy Boxes.

I've worked in the video games industry for over 8 years and I know it's easy to think that they could jsut use 3.0 and put everything in there, but it's really not that simple. You really have to think of it as 3 different games and not as 1 that simply evolved to 2.0 and then 3.0.

So if I'm reading you correctly, 1 doesn't really bring anything to the table that isn't in 2. 3 has everything in 1, 2, and 3 but 1 and 2 stuffs are only avalable in toybox mode. Is the gamemodes that arent in toybox for 2 worth playing?

Only the figures are backward compatible, not the playsets (singleplayer adventures). That's why it is still worth to get 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0. If you want to play let's say the playset that came out for 1.0, you need to stick with 1.0.

Characters carry over form version, but not the "game world" those characters play in.

You can play in the toybox, which is the creative sandbox, with any character from any version.

But as an example, the Incredibles was released on 1.0, so you can't play the Incredibles game world without version 1.0.

Hope that clarifies.

That is part of the reason why the game didn't survive. People didn't like having to buy new versions every year or so and then go back and buy older versions to play old content.

Maybe if they ever try again, they will have learned some valuable lessons.

It's not a terrible game, and had they done it this way in the beginning, with expansion packs that didn't require the cost of plastic figures which drove the price up...maybe they'd still be in business.

That's one of the reasons why I think Lego Dimentions is the best Toys To Life video game; rather than create a whole new game to allow more toys to be added, an update to the original game made the new toys compatible.

for me, aside from the characters, the main differences is the mini campaigns that we can play with in each version.

In 3.0, you have star wars campaign.. in 2.0, you'll have marvel's, etc.
