Changing Character

Is it possible to change the character in the gamemodes? Ive been playing and when i go to the character selecter a lot of the characters are greyed out?

if there greayed out that means u canonly use the chars for that play set if u want ot use any char go in to toybox mode like make your own world ay thing thats not a play set
