Super Gear Boy Glitch?

In Chapter 2 when you first update the SGB and get the first game chapter (Chapter 3), does anyone else have the character stuck moving upwards? I didn't know if it's supposed to be like that, but it makes completing the chapter a bit awkward. It was as if a direction pad or anologue stick was stuck, but I'm playing on PC with my keyboard. Is this part of the game design or a glitch?

Edit: Now that I'm playing further through the game and my memory is returning, I'm pretty sure it's intentional.
