Sal biologically is a boy, but its a headcannon that he just doesnt care about gender roles and doesnt care whether or not hes a guy or a girl since he doesnt correct people if they call him a female.

If you go on the the developer's website: https://portablemoose.com, it is stated in the Frequenlty Asked Questions (FAQ) section that Sal is male. No one is assuming, it's a fact.

ik this is late but maybe its cause when introducing himself to larry, the one that helps him have new friends, he says his name is sal and said sally face was a nickname given my OLD friends. Also theres something called his voice, their may not be voice acting but in their world they are physically using their voices.

Because it's literally part of the story. He is refered to as a boy, and it's brought up in-game. He even explains why he is called "Sally" and his pigtails are even questioned. You might want to try paying attention.

Or 2 times in just chapter 4 alone make it clear. When they scream at the lake its obvious that theres a female and male voice screaming. Then at the school, you can enter the boys restroom but when clicking on the girls bathroom, HE says I'd better not go in there.
