Cannot get door to say "Batteries Included" in Episode 1
I have followed the walkthrough to the letter. Replayed the beginning of the game countless times. No matter what I do, I cannot get the locked door to say BATTERIES INCLUDED after I unlock it. Yes, I am entering the right code. The door opens just fine, but it never changes, and the batteries are never in the bag. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, but I still have the same problem. What am I doing wrong? I would like to get past the first chapter! Thanks.

Perhaps using a save file from someone who has made it past that point would be a work around?

I would give you one, but my computer with Steam is back at home for the moment.

I wish I could figure out what I am doing wrong. I got the code. I put it in. The door never says battery included. I must be making some mistake, but there isn't much of the game before this point. I feel like I've tried everything but maybe I'm missing a key action without realizing it? Can you think of any other necessary actions I should take to make the door say BATTERIES INCLUDED? And thank you for replying. I really want to play this game but I'm totally stuck now and considering returning it.
I have to ask you are putting in the door code, "5364" correct?

Yes. The door opens on the first try (and I've done it a dozen times now).
The door always opens regardless of the code you put in. You only get one attempt to open the door. The outcome of the door's animation indicates if you've done it correctly.

Does the door light up, or does the control panel shatter after you enter the code?

-If the control panel shatters/explodes you entered the wrong code.

-If the control panel lights up you've entered the correct code.

(Just trying to rule out what's going on one step at a time.)

I put in the correct code. Nothing shatters. The control panel lights up, but the indicator on the door never changes to Batteries Included. I feel like I've tried everything.

Can you provide a screenshot of what it looks like lit up without saying "batteries included." This could be some kind of bug.

After the door lights up for you have you played through Chapter 1 and attempted to get the Gear Boy and batteries? I believe the order is:

Get the gear boy, then get the batteries, then get the game, then enter 403. After that get the nickel from your apartment, then trade it for chug's key, then enter the bathroom in 504 twice. THEN you can play the game. If you give Charley the drugged tea any time before you do all of these steps, then you can't talk to Megan and therefore can't play the game.

If you cannot get the batteries from the grocery bags then you've definitely encountered some kind of bug. I will add it to my master bug list.

Let me know what happens, and if you're still stuck I will see if I can give you a save file that contains the batteries already collected. I'd like to see what happens when your file that can't get the batteries is replaced by a file that has it already!

I just tried again and took a picture of the screen. Not sure how to add a screenshot, but it 100% definitely was the right code, the number pad did not crack or blow up, the door opened but did not say Batteries Included. Nothing on the door changed. I'm at my wit's end.

I had a similar issue and it seems like it's a bug. I had to delete my save, uninstall and reinstall the game, and then, at the keypad, press "F" instead of "Enter" or "Space" to get it to work. Otherwise it unlocks the door without lighting up the batteries sign and you won't get the batteries later. I'm not sure why it's stuck on using "F" for it to work, but that's what fixed it for me.

Here is what worked: using the E button on the keypad instead of hitting Enter. Finally I can play the game!
