Worth it? No. not at all.
Why? Call portal, Neo buffs, return, easy detect and trap disarm (almost 99% if you have 15 luck and 15 wis...) and its pretty much the ONLY way to progress at certains point...
...unless you're lucky enough to find a Psycrack item which I still doubt exist.
Their skill, Brain Spire, is hella usefull for late-game bosses and Wanted variant. As it boost your unity gauge.
They also have a spell called Range Break or something. Again a boss with numerous meatshield, it's the best thing since the invention of the wheel. it means every enemy beyond the first row can not attack your party.
Possible? yes.
Technically speaking, you might be able to finish the story without an academic. Just forget about most Wanted Variant in the second semester and anything post-game. buy yourself a few Call Portal item and get hit for full damage instead of half. sure.
Doors are literally a none issue, just pick whoever the game defaults to and mash, there's no Door Traps or anything so its just a matter of time
Your biggest losses on the field are Neo Scan(handy when you start worrying about which exact palette swap you're fighting), Return Gate, and Call Portal, the second one has an infinitely buyable item, and the third a limited supply buyable
Your biggest losses in Battle are Neo-PSI Guard, which helps resist statuses attached to physical attacks, Range Break, which means that the enemy can't physically attack your back row, or physically attack at all if they're not on the front row, and the Brain Spire skill
