First time playing since 2018

I've played this game for a record 38 minutes with immense lag (I once kickstarted the game but my pc couldn't run it) any tips? I just remember being really excited about it but also hoping there'd be ways to tune down zombies in settings (which I haven't found) or at least make them look pretty. (ok, if you hadn't guessed i'm a woman now you have it, I am)
Now that I have a pc that can run it I should really check out if kickstarting it was worth it :') so i'm about to go out there and attempt surviving. Also I haven't found single player options are there PvE servers out there?
