The Pixel defender store page is now live!

Pixel defender is an SNES-style idle tower defense game.
There's almost nothing to operate in-game, so as a rule you don't step into the fighting yourself.
...But that alone would get boring, so the whole game is designed around one idea: being "fun just to watch."

In the dialogue log at the bottom of the screen, the soldiers keep talking throughout the battle. The tone is pretty lighthearted, so just reading the dialogue log is fun on its own.
"Report! The neighbors have grilled fish today!"
"...That is not an enemy report."
"Oh, and I saw three enemies!"
"Lead with that next time."
Your soldiers have personalities, and so do the enemy soldiers: a heavy infantryman who laughs "Gahaha!"; a haughty noblewoman archer who looks down on the kingdom's archers as country bumpkins; and a military slime that wobbles while it worries about lunch. There are thousands of lines, including exchanges between specific pairs of soldiers, so the banter stays fresh.
On top of that, there are hundreds of dedicated animations matched to the lines.

The classic appeal of an idle game is the satisfying payoff of pouring your resources into upgrades. Pixel defender is balanced so that even a few minutes of idling leaves you with plenty to upgrade, meaning any spare moment is enough to make your squad stronger.

Left alone, the game plays itself, which makes it a light companion while you work or watch videos. The borderless window is small and stays out of the way of whatever else you're doing.
That doesn't mean there's nothing to do. Once you start thinking about your formation, it's a different story. Use the Maid's Ultimate to slow a whole crowd of enemies, then have your Archers focus fire on them. Catching slowed enemies in an area attack can also help you trigger Ultimates more efficiently, but the game deliberately leaves this unexplained.
You can mount four kinds of defenses on the castle wall: the Flame Turret, Frost Turret, Lightning Turret and Catapult. Flames from the Flame Turret spread through forests and go out the moment they land in a river. Use Flame Turrets on forest-heavy stages, or Frost Turrets to freeze the water on river-heavy ones, and your choice of turrets changes how a stage plays out.

I wanted to make a game that brings back a little nostalgia, lets you enjoy the banter between soldiers and the Ultimate cutscenes, and is fun just to watch.
Unlike in most incremental games, you're not chasing efficiency here. Simply watching is enough.
I hope players enjoy that kind of experience.

Pixel defender is scheduled to release on November 24, 2026. If you add it to your wishlist, Steam will let you know when it comes out. I'll keep posting updates here.
