Pick any hero and start a regular game. Once you have your hero on the first screen, press T to open the chat box. Type the command /dm1 and press Enter.
This will activate the Dungeon Master mode. Now you can type /help to get a list of all the commands.
To get blank levels to edit, use /forest /roof /castle /battlements, etc. as noted in help.
To add new elements to the level, use the mouse wheel. If you want to paste multiple elements of the same type, press V on the keyboard.
To move elements around, click and hold the left mouse button and drag them.
To delete elements, press Backspace.
To line up elements vertically, select one of the elements and press the right mouse button over others. To line up horizontally, press H on the keyboard.
To add placeholders for enemies, press 1.
You can spawn enemies to try it out with F4. But be careful, this will destroy the enemy placehoders. So, make sure you save the level before spawning.
The editor works with a single save file named temp.storage. To save the level, press F2. To load it back press F5. When you save, the game will show the path to the save file on the screen. You can use the /showdir command to open it directly in the standard file browser.
If you want to try your levels in the real game, you need to rename the temp.storage and move it into "levels" directory of the game. If you cannot find it, type /showdir command to see the location of your user files and then open the "full.log" file in Notepad. At the very start of full.log file, there is a line with "SDL_GetBasePath" which will show you full path to the game files.
Once you find the game "levels" directory, look at the files in there and rename your temp.storage file to the next available number. For example, in the current version, the last forest level file is named forest043.storage. So you can name your file forest044.storage.
If you make many levels and want to make sure you get them in the game, just delete some of the default ones and re-use their numbers.
If you make some nice levels and you want me to include them in the game, please e-mail the storage files to: dev@bigosaur.com
If you have any questions, feel free to ask here or e-mail me at that same address.
As for the campaigns, there is no support for that kind of modding currently, but maybe I could add something in the future if there is interest and we decide what kind of features should be allowed (custom dialogue? custom item drops? custom NPC or unit graphics?).
