Personally, I like him more than Lloyd, but I like Estelle and Kevin a lot more than either. How much time you want to give him, and how much you can deal with a not-that-great main character for the sake of the story and the other characters is up to you.
Lloyd is less of a Mary sue because overall the enemies he fights are weaker than Rean´s and Zero is more simple than TOCS (talking about only Zero here as Azure is not out yet).

Azure in english has been around for a bit now, just not on Steam.
We will have to agree to disagree.
Also aware of azure geofront, Talking about oficial release here which means I´m waiting.
Yeah, he is pretty much a worse Loyd. Both of them are nice to a T, both of them get all the girls without doing anything, both of them are about the whole friendship bs etc...
Where Loyd differs from Rean, however; is that he actually feels genuine. I won't defend his harem bs, that is almost as bad as Rean's with only saving grace being that there aren't too many waifu scenes in Zero. However, Loyd's cast is MUCH smaller, meaning the characters get more time under the spotlight and you don't just rely on the bonding events for character build up. When we learn about Tio's past, the entire cast is there to reflect on it, unlike in CS where, most of the time, it is just Rean who is present to hear it.
also to the above comment lmao if you're bothered with harem type stuff and the power of friendship what are you even doing playing an anime game? that stuff comes with the territory lol.
Also I feel like the reason for the harem thing is like they didnt want you to be forced into some dumb relationship with someone like Elise who is like the worst char ever by far imo. you gotta make some sacrifices when you give people options like that, take mass effect for example.
This is mainly a difference between how Japanese and western fans see their heroes.
Rean has won the yearly Falcom poll for "Best Trails Character" the last 8 years in a row.
And came second on the "All Time Falcom Character" poll, just behind Adol from Ys.
That is not a coincidence. Rean is pretty much the perfect protagonist for what the Asian audience likes.
Asia LOVES their boyscout heroes with selfdoubt.
The Trails director is even on record stating that for him Rean is the perfect Trails protagonist and the heart of the entire franchise.
I don't have an issue with boy-scout protagonists, but they portray him as so unbelievably stupid that you start to question his sentience.
Everything you wrote makes me question the fans of this series. There are so many other characters that are actually interesting and grow, but the plank of wood is the most popular????
