If you're not here for a deep and elaborate story with a lot of words, you're in the wrong series.

Politics has always being a part of this series. The politics in the game is way less complicated than real life politics, and it is not that hard to understand.

I like the political part of the plot in this game. It's very simple, but serious enough to make sure that you don't go sunshine and rainbows with your field studies.

Well politics is the reason why I played this game in the first place

Sadly political aspect in this game isnt as deep as in FC.
For the most part you have Aristorcats being bad vs god goverment with Ozborne being creepy loser,
Only good aristocrats are the onse who sided with goverment, Most party members are commoners or goverment dogs except blonde guy, So even from that perspective game pushes your views in certain direction.

Honestly they could do way better job if aristocrat faction had proper arguments for their side. Like process of centralization which happened in late middle ages lead to rise of tyrany and total control of a county by one man,
From one side it gave benefits of erasing menace of infighting but at same time some tyrans ruined their countries without any counter ballance.

But hey bad guys vs good guys is more acessible for 5 year olds, right?

... Excuse me?

Let us recount the political themes FC and CS1 explored, shall we? SPOILERS for FC and CS1 ahead!

FC

Nepots = greedy bastards, patriots will only start rebellions when mindcontrolled, and a young girl must learn about responsibility.

... Compared to CS1

  • Since Osborne's rise to power, he has been absorbing surrounding nations through ostensibly "peaceful" and "legitimate" means. It is heavily implied that he strong armed or manipulated Jurai into "joining" the Empire, so much so that it resulted in more than a few people thinking that Osborne ought to be killed because of it.
  • Osborne has been cracking down on free speech, kicking a teacher from his job and removing him from campus because he was spreading awareness on Osborne's dubious and morally bankrupt policies.
  • Osborne is attacked by a Jaeger corp, and goes far beyond then simply defending himself from his attackers: he butchers the entirety of the group, camp followers included.
  • Due to the nature of the class system, it is in the noble's best interests to keep their assets within their class, leading families to lay intense pressure on their children to disregard who they love and enter into arranged marriages with other noble families. The nobles are just as much victims of the class system as the commoners.
  • Osborne has been slowly but surely eroding the power of the nobles, having his RMP build railways and stations in their territory (ostensibly for the public good, and then justifying the RMP's intervention in their territories using said railways and stations. He then expands this governmental power to include all of his agencies, effectively taking control from the nobles. His flagrant use of eminent domain to build these railways and train stations has resulted in many people (nobles and commoners) losing their livelihoods and familial lands. It is implied during the standoff in Roer, that Osborne has been using the RMP to track and follow his opposition...
  • Because of the above, the class system forces the nobles with their backs against the wall to fight back in a last ditch effort to save what they have left, leading them to either spend their fortunes (Rogner) or draw money from their provinces (Alberea) to raise private armies, build fortifications (Aurochs), stockpile weapons (Achtzen battle tanks, research and develop new technologies (Soldats)
  • Crossbell - a territory shared between the Empire and the Republic as an unparalleled source of revenue - has begun stirring up the pot by advocating for its independence as a sovereign state. Mayor Crois and Crossbell patriots must treat lightly because the Empire and the Republic have utterly superior firepower, but both the Empire and the Republic must tread lightly because they depend on funding from the IBC. A power struggle ensues.
  • Garrelia Fortress is apparently annihilated by Crossbell, who coincidentally have entered a defensive formation and have frozen the Empire's assets in the IBC. Unemployment rates rise, parents demand retribution for their dead sons, young men flee town to dodge the draft, and Osborne capitalizes on this as an excuse for further conquest.
  • The Empire and the Republic have entered into a cold war with each other, having become so paranoid and nervous that after two outposts on the far edges of their borders are attacked, their first instinct is to wage war the morning after, rather than wait for the investigation of the attacks to finish.

Who's the bad guy? Which side is right? There is no way I could simplify this like FC. To do so would be disingenuous. This is for 5 years old, amirite?

Party members: Let's see...

Aside from the witch, EVERYONE in Class VII is tied to the history and political situation both within and without the Empire. They each provide compelling arguments for their view, which changes over time.
