Please note that the site has spoilers for Cold Steel II so don't click on any of the other links and definitely do not click on Story II. The link itself should have no CSII spoilers itself and should be just Story I.
now see, i didnt know it was officially translated, thanks a lot
There is no English dub of the Drama CD, but if you want the Japanese dub, here is a direct link to the youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIR8pR7S_pc
And here is the video itself:

You're totally fine as long as you stick to the linked page. It's set after Chapter 6 in CS1, but before Chapter 7. The game does sum up some of it, but there's a lot it leaves out... which is actually sort of unbelievable, because some important stuff happens in there that it just never tells you about yet expects you to know because it's super canon.
No problem!
Falcom had to cut it from the game due to time restraints, which is why it was relagated to a Drama CD. I'm pretty sure there are some remnants of Ymir in Cold Steel 1's code; I saw some screenshots of it.
And yeah, it was important enough to the story that Xseed translated it and put it up on the CSII site for free so that everyone could read it. I wouldn't call it absolutely mandatory, but CSII does make references back to it, so there really is no reason not to read it (or you can do what Sandvich did and read it while listening to the Japanese dub alongside it).
Doesn't seem to be art of the Ymir trip specifically; why would Class VII walk through what appears to be the area round Trista when they could just walk from their Dorm to the trainstation and get on the cable car up to Ymir? IMO, looks like Class VII is going on a little trip outside Trista, perhaps for an actual orienteering course or to learn other outdoors skills.
