But lets give a bit of a shout out to the awesome npc storylines going on to. A nod to Vincent, Margarita, Beryl, and my soul-sister Dorathee. xD
I have to give another shoutout to Estelle again as the best character in the entire oeuvre of Nihon Falcom. Truly, the best protagonist out of all the rpgs I've played so far. Who ever knew a 2004 pixeled sprite could be so charismatic, expressive, or so endearing?
Where Estelle commands the room, I think Rean suffuses through it. But really, both characters are so dynamic, that Rean can take and has taken the helm when appropriate, and Estelle has countless subtle moments. Rean, like Estelle before him, embodies a genuinely charismatic leader who shuts up and lets others talk before giving his own opinion. Hell, not enough people do that in real life, nevermind a videogame.
Another shout out to Olivier, for making a triumphant return from the Sky trilogy to the series; you can't miss him if he never leaves! And, he's exactly as I remembered him, which is amazing consistency.
Falcom writers strike again by making me fall in love with all the NPCs and characters. Jusis and Machias were weak links (no pun intended) at first, but even their antics grew on me. It was just too funny to hold their contempt for each other against each other. Same thing with the antics of various other characters. Sara's beer antics, Crow's gambling, Jusis's and Machias's contempt for each other, Millium's hyperactivitiy, and Angie's perviness was kinda distasteful at first. But after playing this game for 95 hours, their antics can't help but grow on me. If any of those characters stopped behaving like the above, I would definitely have spotted that and that would have been weird. The Falcom writers strike again by writing each character to be so thoroughly themselves that you have to love every single one. At least, most of them.
Emma and Elliot were kind of adorkable. Plus, I myself am a musician. Alisa's tsundere act was kind of annoying at time, but she does still wear her heart on her sleeve for Rean and I suppose she's just overcoming some internal struggle in regards to Rean (should I? should he? will he? will he ever? I hope he never! When WILL he??). That despite how much she picks on Rean is quite endearing. Plus, she's a doll. Gaius especially by the end turned out to be a bro fighter! Holy s***! They just couldn't touch him! I looked at his stats; nothing out of the ordinary, but he would dodge every other swing from enemies, including enemy crafts and s-breaks. Wow. Stay on his good side; "just can't touch this!".
Fie had one of the sweetest character arcs in all of the Trails games! She started out as a loner, somewhat down, and unconfident in herself to the point where she struck me as depressed. But slowly, she joined that garden club and was so happy to see a little effort literally blossom. It was so sweet to see that CG sprite happy, I had to spend time with her. Soon, the other classmates included her: Emma tutored Fie, Laura took her under her wing etc. She was the most fun towards the end. Almost every girl in this series flirts incorrigbly with Rean, and several times Fie was perceptive enough to excuse herself from being the third wheel when another was flirting with Rean. I thought that was so chill of Fie to catch those drifts. Despite how chronically lethargic she still strikes me, ain't nothing getting past her.
In regards to the best non-protagonist character, I felt that Rean had a real partner-in-crime with Laura. I felt that they were equals in every regard: that they were swordsmen, athletes, good-mannered, noble spirits, mild temperaments, and protective to whatever they valued (including each other), and both encouraged each other to better themselves. If ever Rean couldn't lead the party as he'd usually do so, I felt confident that Laura could. The moments through the bonding events felt intimate and a bit more organic than even with Alisa or Emma. By some part of the campaign, Laura's imposing father looked Rean square in the eye and said, "I think Laura means something more to you than just a friend...." That was kinda intimidating, yet very perceptive of him. He was right though. I'd just hate to cross him with his daughter. Rean and Laura had the very best chemistry out of all of the rest of the cast.
I'm pretty sure somewhere out there there are girls having an orgasm whenever he unsheathes his tachi.
She could've replaced Emma (who has no personality anyway).
- If I had to decide which hero/heroine I wanted to play the most, Estelle is definitely the most fun (dynamic or unpredictable, most likely to say something funny/inspiring).
- In terms of character development, I'd take Kevin over Estelle or Rean. Weird, I know. But Kevin, who is older than the other 2, has some seriously ingrained personality flaws that cause problems for the other, and they need working out. That makes for a more interesting development arc, though I don't think Sky the Third fully did it justice. Rean and Estelle are basically decent people whose personal flaws don't really cause problems, so their growth ends up being, for lack of a better word, more external and less substantive than Kevin's.
Role models
- I actually think Kloe, Laura and Alisa are the best female role models (in terms of the heroes). They're diligent, principled, and self-reflective. They're also strong-willed and compassionate. They don't sacrifice being female or feminine for their strength and leadership roles.
Estelle, on the other hand, as a kind of stereotypical tomboy with a heart of gold, lacks the overall diligence (she's only diligent if she's continually emotionally invested) and her self-reflection namely has to do with her external powerlessness, not her interior disposition or flaws. She lacks the "balance" (intellectual, physical, emotional) of the other females.
The biggest detriment to Estelle being a favorite in terms of role models or best heroines, I think, is that she's content to let her feelings drive everything she says and does. This is endearing most of the time in the game, but it also frustrates me to no end, because when it turns out all right for her, it's the most unrealistic aspect of the game.
I do understand the Estelle-love, though. The "Everything can be solved with love, determination, and a big stick" feel we get from her is heart-warming. It's just not enough for me to think she's the best female in the games, though.
- Also, I love Towa, but all we really know about her is that she is a hard-working cutie with a great strategic mind. She doesn't have a wide variety of interesting experiences or emotions. She does seem to fit into the positive characteristics I attribute to Alisa, Laura, and Kloe, though.
Along similar lines, I love Instructor Beatrix and Instructor Mary. Warmhearted teachers who are compassionate, hard-working, and strong in different ways. I would have liked to see more of them overall.
- A lot of the male characters are okay, but the ones I'd consider good role models aren't very well-developed (like the Principal or Victor). I did like seeing Zechs Vander's thoughtfulness in terms of practical decision-making in a time of potential war. Cassius is too much of a Mary Sue to be a role model for anyone, though I'm very pleased that he and Victor are "good father" role models. (It's rare to have decent parents, much less any parents, in games, y'know?)
... I can't say any of the boys/men are particularly appealing except the older, dad-like characters. Gaius is cool and mature, but his story and personality are just not... interesting.

Oliver best male, he can KO an entire town just by singing. lol.
Personally like Kloe, Laura, Can I Adopt Her Fie and Towa.
Can someone ask Victor Arseid if he wants to adopt a younger daughter? Laura/Fie combo, unbeatable cuteness.
For girls: Millium (Her combination of facial expressions, energy, and blunt personality is cute to me... not to mention I like her design, I think I just like characters with light-blue hair) and Towa (Best cute caretaker).
