Due to the game being heavy with physics interactions, that makes it hard to implement online play and keep the game playing as intended.
However, online play was originally a(n unreached) stretch goal on their Kickstarter and I heard they MAY look into it further if there is a lot of support for it.
But please correct me if I'm wrong GM!
I'll definitely buy it in the future if they incorporate online play.
If that makes sense..
Jepp's comments in this thread sum up exactly what we the developer would say in reply to this very fair question.
Party Golf is a Local Multiplayer title only. (But it does have a single player trials element)
Controller support is not required. With just ONE controller however, you can compete against a mouse player. You can also play against an additional 3rd player with just one controller as well by enabling "Wacky Eight Player Split Controller Mode" from the menus. In that mode, two players use one half of the controller each, and may optionally play against the mouse player as well.
We've just looked into this and discovered that you can only split the PS4 controller since we make use of the PS4 controller's Touch Bar for this. We are currently looking to a solution to allow other controller types to do this (e.g. it will likely be using the "back" button on the Xbox360 controller), as well as a fallback keyboard shortcut for people with controllers that may lack the buttons.
We expect to patch in this functionality very soon as Wacky Eight Player Shared Controller mode is one of our favourite ways to play, and super important to let people play with friends when they don't have enough controllers! We'll post in here when this functionality comes through.
