Does Mark always die/disapear?

This is the third of fourth time I've started over, and every time mark shows up, things go well, then he's the first to die and everything falls apart. Right now my notifs say he feels bad, but I can't find him. He's supposed to be getting wood, but isn't anywhere. Is this like part of the story or a glitch or am I just bad at this lol

Mark should live to finish the game with a good ending. If he disappeared, that means all the wood on the screen is depleted and he moved outside the screen, where he died.
