Ignoring video card control panel and monitor options about aspect ratio... or using a low resolution...
I downloaded Open Broadcaster Software (OBS v0.659b).
Set the recording program to capture the game's inner window, and stretch to fit, and set the FPS to something high. Under advanced you can check "Disable encoding while previewing".
Not sure if it matters, but I have an Nvidia card, and there is an option to use the Nvidia encoder which won't bog down the CPU, set to a high bitrate.
Anyway, set the resolution to the game or your desktop.
Then finally hit Preview Stream, and Enable View/Fullscreen Preview on the main window for OBS. With a little bit of fiddling, hopefully the game should be running lag free, properly stretched to full screen. Just alt+tab to your game and play as normal.
Works for any odd game where you can't full screen, or there are black borders, etc.
(Helps to have an extra monitor for some games though...)
I still wish the game had a resizeable window like in Coffin of Ashes.
