The Cult Behind the Cult 🖤 Artbook & OST Out Now!

Nov 3

A little more of our world to take with you 🖤

The Cult of the Yellow King Art & Storybook and Original Soundtrack are out now!

Thank you to everyone who asked for these, and to everyone who’s been part of our strange little cult. We’re so happy to finally share them with you.

The Art & Storybook brings together the complete story from the game, arranged to read as a book, alongside lots of artwork, including a few pieces by Kerem that aren’t in the game. We took inspiration from Vermis while putting the book together, and we hope you’ll enjoy spending some time with its pages.

Thank you for giving our strange world a place in yours, and for all the lovely messages and encouragement along the way. We read them, share them with each other, and smile a lot. We hope these pages and songs bring you a little happiness too <3

Love this game but black metal was a terrible choice for the tone of this game.

I think something more weird/ethereal would be a million billion times better like some david lynchy jazz,,, some piano idk there are tracks that feature what I like to refer to as "goblin voice" and its so so garbage or this deep screeching that's just ugh yuck. this ♥♥♥♥ should sound,,, occult? ethereal,, chill??? its a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ incremental I don't want rip and tear vibes for my incremental. "so go play another incremental" I probably will, but im disappointed as the general art direction is gorgeous, it ...

🟡Update 1.0.4

Oct 23

Heyy Cultists! 💛
A new update is here! This one fixes a big bug with Songs of Commitment, along with a few smaller fixes and clearer tooltips.

Songs of Commitment: Fixed a major bug that prevented you from buying Scripts after choosing this path. If you chose Songs of Commitment and still can’t buy Scripts, please send me your save file so we can help you get it sorted! (bilge@metaphor-games.com)[metaphor-games.com)]
Relic upgrades: Generator-related relic upgrades now explain why they’re locked when you’ve chosen Songs of Commitment.
Stasis Ritual: Trying to buy an upgrade without enough Yellow Mold now shows an insufficient-currency message.
Temple Flares: Flares now stay visible for 15 seconds. Each flare also has a tooltip explaining the Insight reward and the relic’s temporary click-power bonus.
Scripts: The purchase row now explains what you need to unlock them when they’re unavailable.

Sorry to everyone affected by the Scripts bug, and thank you so much for reporting these issues and being patient with us! <3

Major Balance Update + QoL Improvements + Bug Fixes − Sleep

Oct 14

Hey everyone 💛

The balance update is live, along with some QoL improvements and bug fixes.

We think we made a mistake while trying to make a longer idle game. We love leaving idlers running, coming back to buy a few upgrades, and letting them run some more. That’s how we like to play. But while making our own, we ended up adding too many bottlenecks and stretching things out more than we should have. We see that now.

With this update, you’ll get a shorter, more compact Cult of the Yellow King experience, with less waiting between upgrades.

Quality of Life

Added bulk buying for Whispers, Horrors, Cultists, Librarians, and Writers. You can now buy them using x10, x20, x50, and x100 buttons.
Added an auto-repeat toggle for the Biomass Furnace. When enabled, it automatically starts another sacrifice cycle using the last selected fuel.

Balance

Reduced Whisper, Cultist, and Horror costs and lowered Shrine/Altar multipliers.
Reduced the Biomass Furnace cycle time from 900 to 120 seconds and increased the Biomass reward per cycle from 1 to 4.
Rebalanced Prestige story goals, Crossing costs, and Campaign unlock requirements.

Visuals

Fixed some UI panels that weren’t displaying correctly.

Bug Fixes

Fixed Rites of the Yellow Architect preventing four relics from working.
Fixed some story messages appearing twice.

Tonight was rough. Some of the reviews were hard to read, and we felt pretty down. We care a lot about this game. And we really wanted you to enjoy it.

We’re reading every review and discussion, and we’ll keep working on the game. If you didn’t enjoy the version you played, we hope you’ll give this update another chance. We’d really love the chance to win you over.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their thoughts, report a bug, or send us a kind message. It means a lot <3

“A Ritual Without End” Achievement

What is the exact requirement for this last achievement? I completed the campaign with the five prestiges, including later the Bromass Furnace, the Rites of the Yellow Architect and The Crossing, would it then be enough to complete five prestiges (from I to V) in a second campaign, without the need to play the Furnace, Rites and Crossing again? Or will it be necessary to complete the entire game a second time? I ask because the achievement description simply states “prestige ten times”....

The King in Yellow is one of my favorite novels of all time, I've read it multiple times. Hastur is one of my favorite entities in all of weird fiction. So, to indulge in my hyperfixation, I am finally glad to have a game I can just vibe to whenever without cosmic level stress.

The aesthetics are cute and endearing, I love the heavy, drippy pixelated style. The lore bits between waiting are a nice edition. And the music was a good pick too, in my opinion. Merhum, when are you getting a Bandcamp?

What are the chances that I find this game right when I'm in the middle of reading The King in Yellow for the first time? The black stars of Hyades must have aligned.

Completing the Stasis Ritual

I'm unclear on how to do it. Having purchased the four corners, the center square is still lit up but clicking it does nothing, and nothing appears in the smaller box on the right. I assume this means its is uncompleted, since the prestige option is not available in spite of my having well over 50 whispers, 50 cultists, and 175 horrors. Any ideas?...
