Medic is OP. Commanders are not there for killing targets even if they are pretty capable to do a LOT of damage with their small pistols. Commanders purpose is to make all your troops stronger if you play high waves or nightmare. It is good to place them in safe regions. If you have no safe regions move some slots away..
Medics for instant heal of ALL attacked troops at the same time. Explosive advisor for all explosives included airstrike and drones (with rocket option). Electrical engineer for your tesla unit and turrets (awesome). Finally the commander itself gives all your soldier units included commanders that one level more for higher damage and some units more HP.
To upgrade them is terrible costly, yes. But it makes sense to upgrade at least the medic. A full upgraded medic is like an immortal and he is able to hold all troops alive.
I have lost one single time my medic and then my commander. Medic was not upgraded to maximum so he died after a very heavy and concentrated attack of 5 bosses and lots of zombie mobs from kamikaze and throwers at high wave 90..
There is not that much of maps with a safe slot spitters and birds can't reach easily even with moving slot away
If you fear your medic could fall build a second one ;)
Oh, and don´t forget the move slot option with gold upgrades.
Also, when you place the commander, the zombie bounty resets, so you get much higher income for a while. Just make sure you place him in the middle of a set of levels, so you get the most value out of it.
I would rather heal myself if I see no other option or move my unit around until he regens his health cost FREE.....Medic is not a good idea
I still stand by that Commanders are overpriced....their abillities are not really worth the price
For me certainly there was never a money flow problem playing the maps (and i go usually for high waves, nightmare). If i play my nightmare maps i use commanders every time. Both Medic and Commander always, sometimes electrical engineer as third option. Explosive advisor rarely. I can say there are no problems to solve the map after taking commanders up to wave 150+/nightmare.
Without this classes i was often forced to take commandos all over the map because of high HP, high ratio, high damage and good range. With commanders i can use my cheap starting units like police or survivalists even at the highest waves.
Medic = 7.000$ to place = Heals all units = Healing automaticlly spends money = no profit = no money prevents healing = soilders die = Medic has low HP = Medic dies = 7k wasted + soldiers dead
and this is without counting the costs of upgrading their rank wich would be even a bigger money loss
That is how I see it
I did not unlocked other 2 and I don't plan to waste 70k on unlocking them....since these 2 proven they are not a good option for the price

this is on boss mode.. on normal its much more easy to get higher rounds (200+) with 1 commando and 1 medic
But personally i like the different units and i place them as often as i can. Half laser - half soldiers all over the map or with new placed slots to play a corral game like your screenshot.
But in fact, the higher the wave are the more laser turrets are needed (to replace old tesla, LMG or fire turrets, or simply some soldiers). Reaching wave 150 and + in nightmare the game starts to turn slightly into an "true" tower/turret defense game.
Commander gives a bonus rank to everyone is cheaper than upgrading and more effective damage increase when you using a lot of soliders (unless you gone turret heavy)
Electrical engineer is godly with electric units as he gives double damage to them all.
Advisor is great if your using explosives as he doubles damage for all of them.
Not if you want to profit....they are only good for late game if you plan on going to 100 and +
Medic wastes your money when he heals.....you are better of doing it manually when your unit reaches 5% HP and not 25%....also you can manually run around and regen for free.....if you are out of money Medic is usless
But once you WANT to play a long run Commanders are a very needed unit and you are able to do some money.

Here i use a medic and a commander and i am not short at money. BUT it is a long run..
So, it´s a question of playstyle
