Or you can be smart about pre-ordering. Instead of pre-ordering when there's months/years left of development...just do what I did with Biomutant. Keep an eye on it and a few days before release, buy it. When the deadline is that close and no one announces a delay, it'll come out (and you'll still get the "pre-order bonuses"). Even if it doesn't, you can still refund. I still won't pre-order anything "made" by BioCrap, Ubisuck, Microcrack, or a number of other "AAA" corporations 'cause that's all they are. A corporation.

EDIT:
It also seems as a different team is going to be "finishing" this game. Or they'll start all over again 'cause they aren't familiar with the code. It's also entirely possible that this game will follow StarCraft: Ghost into the Void.

Except Biomutant isn't a good game.

Never pre-order.

Pre-order 'bonuses' are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ anyway.
But if you literally have nothing to worry about because you can just refund for two weeks post launch then what's the issue? This isn't 2012 anymore, and you aren't being asked to waive the right to see how the game does with reviews for a special LMG or something.

The refund option is a poor excuse to justify cowboy developers i see it used time and time again....

Like i said the longer they can keep your money the more money they make their are plenty of vid's on the net explaining this.

Their is absolutely no reason why pre-orders should even exist apart from to raise the price of the game by offering limited time variations or to get your money 6 months before like the saying goes time is money.

That's your opinion. Nothing is perfect. I see the flaws in Biomutant but enjoy the game anyway. Why? Because I don't demand absolute perfection. Just because you don't like a game doesn't mean it isn't good; it merely means you weren't part of the target demographic. Naturally there are objective exceptions, games that are objectively bad, but there aren't a great many of those and they tend to be forgotten very quickly (because of how objectively bad they are). Can't remember the name of it, but Jim Sterling had legal "trouble" over some game he reviewed ages ago; I saw the gameplay clips in his video and that game is objectively bad.

Bottom line: 99.99[9]% of the time one's view on what is "good" or "bad" is subjective, which means it is their opinion. Doesn't mean they're wrong, simply means that's their truth but it is not a fact.

This game had more developmental red flags than a soviet parade no one who was paying attention to it should have preordered.

even if we ignore the game itself lets look at the other major rpg studios

obsdian. deadfire was trash tyranny was unfinished and other worlds was meh at best.
bethesda. fallout 76 enough said
Bioware. andromada and anthem
CDred cyberjunk

at this point trusting a major rpg to be good a preordering is asking to be burned

Pre-ordering is killing gaming. You should have known by now...

Why do you think we get a low quality Battlefield, Need for Speed and Assassin's Creed every year?

because ubisoft and ea love recycling games?

pre-orders aren't the issue, lazy formulaic games are.

What does preorder have to do with Battlefield or Assassin's Creed? You don't preorder tickets for Fast and Furious 27, and yet they still every year make a bland uninspired boring disappointing movie that sells a billion tickets. The reason why BF and AC sell so well is because of name recognition, and because there's a very real problem in the industry of AAA studios mindlessly pumping hyper massive budgets into bad games knowing that no matter how bland the gameplay is that having a graphical polish will sell games.

It's a very slow death then because preorders for games have been around for at least 25 years.

Rubbish they starting to appear more commonly around 2010 and on wards when Steam really started to become a force and stores were becoming irrelevant.

For instance the first Total war game i remember being pre order was Empire in 2009.

Wrong again. Preorders for video games started when Wal-Mart began selling video games and they were the ones who started the practice in the first place. You could pre-order Mario 64 and the N64 like 6 months before they actually came out.

Moving of the goal posts. We were talking about pre-orders, in general.

Also, you still don't know what you're talking about. There were pre-order bonuses in the 90's. For example, some retailers offered a free CD with pre-orders of Pokemon Gold/Silver. No one is forcing you to pre-order. Feel free to just not do it. Pre-ordering saves you like $5 on paid DLC that will be in the store anyway. Paradox uses the same DLC policy across all of its games.

Again you did not have to buy the game as a pre order no money was taken if you bought from a store the most they would take was a deposit or just you name and number.

The trend we now see is game companies asking full price with incentives to lure people into getting your money quicker.
