There's a hint throughout the game spoken by the crow man. So the question becomes "Why is the crow man addressing you as that title?"

For this game (the other rusty lake games keep changing perspective) we are William. In Rose's room we have to introduce ourselves as such.

Well, at the very end Mr.Crow refers to Mr.Owl as being a third party, so I don't think William is Mr.Owl. Its possible we were a decent guy that was just looking for immortality

So, did Mr. Crow poison his brother William (after the family secrets are unlocked) and take the immortality for himself? That William is really determined on coming back.

So the really important question is "Who are James' parents?"
It can't be William (confirmed uncle) so that either makes Mr.Crow his dad, in which case Mr.Crow conspired to murder his son/grandchildren just to assist his brother or it is a third sibling of the Vanderboom brothers who just never bothered to show up in any portraits.

it is very confusion So he direct decent from mister grow. That things maybe Mr Crow discovered immortality before William. Killing and help rebirth is part of bigger plan since it took 85 years. Thing is too he damn his brother of being corrupt soul for 85 years until rebirth. Another interesting fact so Dean Vanderdeer is on this path of enlightenment/godhood. he five year older then rebirth William. Wonder how that will play in other games. What up with the animal people. For example Harvey can laid eggs with would he a she. But in hotel and later on Birthday it clear is male. That bother me only a little. lol

I don't think Aldous (the Crow) is James's father. No one mentions his pictures around the house, and he does not resemble James' descendants.
There are three timepiecies - probably, there were three brothers? Or even a third sister (like Frank - he is Emma's son, but he is still Vanderboom).
On the other hand, William is clearly designated as 'roots' of our tree. Maybe he is actually James' father? Who could have been unknown to James and had disguised himself as his 'uncle'.

Wow that could be true. You notice too that corrupt souls can time travel like in seasons. PS I kinda feel bad for James in the beginning of game he look some poor farm hand. by 1870 he had look of proper gentleman then he dies. That thing is Vanderboom brother look quite well off James not so much. Maybe he distance member of the family?
