Elevator not working?

Currently camped in Mole Rats territory, just before cleaning them up. When I take the path that says 'To Old Town', my party appears above a ledge, containing a barrel of water and an elevator. Now, that elevator doesn't seem to do anything for me, but is that supposed to be the case, or did I miss something?

Just scenery I think.
Also I'm curious about water barrel too.

Just flavor to show how different areas were connected. Technically, we can make it work and let you go up and down, but there's nothing to do down there anymore. The water barrel symbolizes the trade, the dredgers trading water from the river, etc.

Actually it could be used as a shortcut. Some people for example leave the first jar scorpions for later, or don't have alchemy until later in game and return to collect all plants.
