The signal protects the cut of cars which you are assigned to connect to. You must get verbal permission from the (imaginary) dispatcher to pass this signal while it is showing red. Press and hold the TAB key to send this request. When (IF!) it is granted, you are allowed to pass that red signal (and only that red signal). If you have PZB protection enabled, you must override the red signal protection by holding down the PZB override switch (DELETE key on your keyboard) to prevent the signal's magnet from applying emergency train brakes.
