BR Class 31 - DSD working?
Hi,

A quick question about the DSD on the Class 31 for TSW. Has anyone managed to get this alert working? I followed the manual and discovered the AWS works fine no problem. The DSD isn't. While the train was moving I didn't press anything for over 60 seconds but no joy.

I did notice one thing. The manual says - If you wish to run with DSD (Driver Safety Device) enabled:

a. Enter the No. 2 Cab and locate the DSD Circuit Breaker Switch (rear
bulkhead), move the switch to On.
b. The DSD will sound an audible alert requiring you to momentarily release the foot pedal (press the Q key to acknowledge DSD).

There is NO alert after switching the DSD Circuit Breaker to on. The alert only happens after switching the AWS on.

Am I missing a switch/button somewhere? Or is the function bugged or not enabled?

Thank you :)

It works flawlessly. The moment you switch that DSD Circuit Breaker it becomes active. There is no sound indication but you can test it by simply standing next to the bogie 1/2 brake dial and watch as the needle slowly moves. DSD works by actually having a separate air tank that fills and stays filled the moment you press and hold the DSD pedal in the case of the BR Class 31. The moment you let go, air starts escaping that tank and in return the loco brakes slowly start applying until almost full application. You can prevent that by stepping on the pedal again after which the brakes will start to release again slowly. Hope this helps :)

There was no DSD on the class 31s when i worked on them in the mid to late 60s,i don't think they will be fitted in this time period 1970s.

Dsd was introduced at a later date lol

I could be wrong about this, but I think the manual may be wrong and has just been copy/pasted from something else because DSD, which is an older system isn't the same as as DVD which is the one with an audible alert that the driver must reset with the foot pedal. DSD (Which this Class 31 is fitted with I believe) is simply a dead mans switch that is constantly held down and would only "activate" if the pedal is allowed to depress.

I haven’t tried it, but I would imagine that if you close the breaker, get the train moving and then stand up you’ll find it activates and applies the brakes.

As LeapingRodent says, I’m sure it’s a DSD rather than DVD & the manual is wrong.

Note - the manuals need to be much much better!

I also worked on those as a reallife driver in the 70's, great little engines. :)

Some kind of dead mans foot pedal appears to be simulated in a lot of locos - if you stand up from your seat they stop applying traction until you sit down again.
