However, even for SteamOS, there is a new update which includes a better launch screen. That means at least you no longer have to press a tiny button to start the game on the Steam Deck, and the launch screen now works with the gamepad controls as well.
Also, there is a new custom controller layout, so that you can use more of the Steam Deck's buttons to add new players. Since you had the game installed before, you may have to select that controller layout manually though. Instructions for that, and some more information, can be found in this thread.
