Recommended Grand Strategy Games?
I have only really played the Total War games and some Endless Space/Stellaris. Are there any you would recommend? I am interested in this one because of the setting but the reviews are very mixed and I don't have much experience with Paradox style games. Not sure if I will enjoy them, when they don't seem to have much in the way of combat systems.

If you like civ type games give Old World a look its pretty amazing. It looks like civ but plays very different.

Victoria is free till monday, you can give it a go and see if you like it. Besides that it's unclear what exactly you want. In terms of cities and such there are good games like Warlock 2 and Endless Legend, but grand strategy like Paradox - not so much, and here Paradox games are unique.

I have played some Endless Legend. I'm after political and economic management with some city building and basic combat systems. I tried CIV and didn't enjoy it as much because of the randomized maps and playing through so many eras. I prefer a focused map and time period. I'm more interested in Napoleonic, Victorian, Bronze age, Roman eras and Sci-Fi/Fantasy. I've already tried a few sci-fi and fantasy ones and enjoyed them enough.

I'm basically after a grand strategy version of Risk set in a time period from one of those eras.

Have you tried EU4. That’s like an incredibly in depth risk game.

I have not. I've looked at a few times but was put off by all the DLC and not really knowing where to start. This is why I've looked at this one, being newer and not having so many years of DLC I have to sift through to find the good ones.

There’s an option to sub. It’s a lot cheaper than buying all of the DLC and give you a chance to really test it.

For me the best Grand Strategy games in order are

CK2
Imperator Rome
EU 4
Stellaris
CK3
Victoria 3
Galactic Civilization 4
Endless Space

Here’s the link to the subscription for EU4

There’s also a sub for CK2 if you want to try that. The base game is free to play.

As much as I want to like Imperator Rome I would not recommend it to anyone. It's a waste of money.
Game isn't finished and it will never be, 0 replay ability. Once you play as Rome and like 1 or 2 of the seccesor states of Alexander you don't really have anything else to do.

True, Vanilla IR lacks replay ability but if you use the Invictus mod it really adds a lot of flavor.

I would recommend CK2 or EU4 over IR probably for most people. CK3 is getting better but still not on the level of those 2

Well, as it happens, you've probably come to the right place as Vic 3 is a political/sociological/economic game set in the Victorian and Pre-WW2 era (100 years) with an abstracted military system. I'm not sure if it's like Risk though ;D

Whether you'd LIKE it is another matter. I'd suggest you watch some Youtube footage and decide for yourself if it is the game for you. Or it's free to play right now so you could actually try it for yourself. But be warned, it's very different from thoise other games you've played and so you won't just fire it up and know what you're doing for a while.
