State of the Game
I picked up Victoria 3 back when it released but found it to be pretty lacklustre and empty compared to Vic 2 and the other Paradox 4X games. Just not much to do and most countries felt identical to each other in flavour.

How is it today? Worth getting back into? Buggy? Lots of good new mechanics? Lots of terrible new mechanics? I've seen some mixed reviews on the new war mechanics but surely it can't be worse than basic battles we had at release. Did they fix the issues with the French expansion?

Nah, not done yet. Probably needs a few more years in the oven to get good. Game is super broken after the latest patching so you will just get frustrated by the idea of how good this game could be. I tried to pick it back up but there was so many crashes that I couldn't even have fun. There are some game breaking bugs with armies and the economy right now (I can't seem to get any factories to run above 30% employment?).

Didn't 1.5 spend several weeks in open beta? QA testers (players) didn't catch all bugs?

1.5 with the new hotfix is ok.
there were about 2-3 crashes and 2 annoying but simple bugs and they are clear now.
runs fine for me... and i´m a returning player, too.

They updated it once or twice then let it sit in it's old state for a month then released a bunch of new stuff onto the main branch that was never tested. You are now the beta tester.

The game in it's previous main patch was the most balanced and functional. Old issues are back that plagued the game at release like generals returning to home HQ after fronts change/nations capitulate. Front lines never moving. Back then it was because losing a second offensive battle reset your previous occupation. Now the new system has a progress system that is impossible to see, but you basically need to win a significant amount of battles otherwise progress is never made and the front never moves. It's basically the same old issue where winning an offensive battle, then losing an offensive battle results in zero progress.

Economies are broken depending on the nation you play. My game as belgium saw no such issues. Any poorer nation and things seem to go terribly.
